The Parliament of Uganda has passed The National Tree Planting amendment bill 2024, rationalizing the National Forestry Authority and transferring its responsibility to the Ministry of Water.

The responsibility of forest management has been transferred to the Ministry of Water and Environment

The NFA has been accused of issuing licenses for destroying forests, planting cauliflower and allocating 100,000 square feet of land Forests.

Dr. Philip Lulume Bayiga did not mince his words in his remarks, accusing the National Forestry Authority of colluding with land thieves to destroy forests and plant cauliflower, only to later steal the land. He cited an example of destroyed forests in Buikwe, which resulted from a similar situation.

However, Kiboga MP Christine Nakimwero explained that despite all this, that the abolition of NFA will also exacerbate the situation.

NFA has now joined other agencies including the Diary Development Authority, NAADS, Cotton Development Authority and others that parliament has decided to withdraw their powers and transfer them to the ministries that have been taking them
