President Yoweri Museveni has blamed the recent floods in Kasese district on the Europeans who diverted River Nyamwamba from its original position.

Museveni was speaking to residents of Katiri, Bulembya in Kasese district on Wednesday after touring the areas that were affected by River Nyamwamba floods in Kilembe.

“Europeans manning Kilembe company diverted the river from the left where it was, to the right as you face Kasese,” said Museveni.

He further explained that when the Europeans diverted the river, they built a bank made of steel and because of the confusion in governance, original Kilembe Company went away.

“When they went away, they did not properly hand over to the Ministry,” added Museveni saying that’s why when it rains a lot, the surrounding areas get affected because of the floods.

He said now the Ministry has not been maintaining the artificial banks and he also did not know. “Even I did not know, just discovered today.”

However, the President also blamed the residents who live in the slopes of the mountain and hills which he said is risky because they will always be affected by the floods and heavy rains.

“The second problem is caused by us; the way we are settled in the hills. Those hills are supposed to have hair. But once you shave the hair, you cause so many problems,” said Museveni.

He promised that the government will help families that lost their loved ones in the Kasese floods.
