Kampala, Uganda – Security Minister, Gen. Elly Tumwine has announced that the night-time curfew which was declared by President Yoweri Museveni will remain in force until further notice.
The curfew, which runs from 7 pm to 6; 30 a.m., was meant to end today, June 21 in line with the 21 days that Mr. Museveni announced on June 1 when he last updated the country on measures being taken to control the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Gen. Tumwine’s security update comes the same day Uganda’s health ministry confirmed 7 new COVID-19 cases. The new cases were recorded from a total of 2,935 samples tested in the last 24 hours from truck drivers, health workers and community contacts.
Of the 1,843 samples collected from truck drivers on Saturday, June 20, two (2) have tested positive for the virus, Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said in a tweet, adding that 1 of the new cases were from Elegu and 1 from Malaba point of entry.
Dr. Aceng also said that, samples from 10 health workers had all returned negative, however, out of 1,082 samples tested from contacts and alerts, 3 people from Kyotera and 2 from Amuru district were diagnosed with the virus.
The new cases push the national cumulative tally to 770 COVID-19 cases with no related death to date. Africa Tembelea, has however learnt that out of the total cases confirmed, 578 have since been discharged from different hospitals across the country after they recovered.
In a related development, 12 foreign truck drivers who tested positive for COVID-19 at Uganda’s points of entry were handed over to their countries of origin, health minister Dr. Aceng said.
