President Yoweri Museveni has warned against conflicts in the region which are based on tribes and religion.
Speaking at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) at parliament in Kampala, Museveni called for regional integration to ensure there is peace.
He warned against conflicts based on tribes and religion and called on countries to, “Organize seminars and dissect this rubbish.”
He said most African conflicts are fueled by ideological mistakes.
“Opportunists are pushing all this (conflicts). When they mix with Europeans, ooops, it’s a cocktail,” he added.
President Museveni attributed the distability to the poor discipline of political actors. “Even if you are fighting a war, why do you rape women, loot property?” he asked.
In terms of regional integration, Museveni said,”Uganda is holding other EAC countries behind because we have not issued out National Identity cards to Ugandans.”
This is because the Single Tourist Visa was supposed to start on January 1st, 2014 but it was delayed and will start in Feb. 2014.
The State Minister for EAC Hon. Shem Bageine informed the EALA Assembly that the country that issues the tourist visa gets US$10 and the others share the US$90.
Museveni also hailed Kenya for the construction of the standard gauge railway from Mombasa to Malaba which has already started.
“This is the struggle to improve the transport and energy sectors are to enable our people to make profit from business.”
President Yoweri Museveni was addressing members East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) at a special meeting in Parliament.
It is the Fourth Meeting of the Second Session of the Third Assembly to take place in Uganda.
According to EALA Speaker, Margaret Zziwa, the assembly will debate on the EAC disaster Risk Reduction and Management Bill 2012, EAC integration (Education) Bill 2014 and the EAC Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2014 as well as tabling the EAC Cooperative Societies Bill 2013.
EALA is also expected during the period to receive and meet different stakeholders as part of its representative activities.
Other Ugandan MPs have also attended the East African Legislative Assembly special session in parliament.
