First Lady Janet Museveni is in the Tanzania’s capital Dar-es-Salaam to attend a two days African First Ladies Summit at the invitation of Mrs. Laura Bush.
Janet Museveni arrived at Julius Nyerere International Airport aboard Air Uganda and was received by the Tanzanian Minister for Human Settlements, Housing and Urban Affairs Prof. Anna Tibaijuka (MP) and Norah Katabalwa Uganda’s Acting High Commissioner to Tanzania.
The African First Ladies summit under the theme “Investing in Women: Strengthening Africa” is hosted by the George W Bush Institute and will focus on the important role First Ladies play in promoting women’s education, health and economic empowerment .
It will be attended by Mrs. Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States, President and Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Cherie Blair, President Jakaya Kikwete and his wife Salma among other notable international and local delegates.
The summit is bringing together African First Ladies, government officials, private organizations, NGOs and academics to discuss best practices, particularly within public-private partnerships that can reap sustainable, replicable results, benefit women and strengthen society.
It will spotlight success stories and best practices and highlight the First Ladies roles as advocates and leaders. A First Ladies Initiative to further the work of the RAND African First Ladies will also be launched.
The African First Ladies are expected to report on successful programmes already underway in their respective countries to better the lives of women during a round table with Mrs. Laura Bush and Mrs. Cherie Blair.
The Summit which aims at advancing women’s economic empowerment, health and education is imperative to development because the inclusion and active participation of women in all areas of society increases stability and prosperity of countries, as investing in women results in better outcomes for entire families, communities and nations.
