President Yoweri Museveni has directed Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to swiftly resolve the Angisa land wrangle in Katakwi district.

The president gave the directive while campaigning for Joseph Koluo, the NRM party candidate for the Toroma county MP by-elections, at Magoro primary school this afternoon.

More than 1000 people were allegedly displaced from Angisa village in Magoro sub-county as a result of a land dispute with Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The contested 300 square kilometer-piece of land borders with Karamoja and Teso sub-regions.

UWA contends that the contested land is a gazetted game reserve while the residents on the other hand claim that they inherited the land from their forefathers.

President Museveni asked UWA to consider settling the matter amicably with residents as opposed to evicting them.

He promised to personally ensure the matter is resolved as soon as possible so as to allow the residents to utilize the land sustainably.

Daniel Othieno, the Katakwi Electoral Commission Registrar, says they are set for the polls come Thursday May 18, 2017.
