President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday consented to the controversial Public Order Management Bill making it an act of parliament.

This was revealed on Twitter by the country’s government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo last evening.

“Museveni has assented to the Public Order Management Bill. It now becomes an act of Parliament” Opondo tweeted.

“BREAKING: #Museveni has assented to the Public Order Management Bill. It now becomes an Act of Parliament. #POMB”

The POMB was approved by Parliament which in the end four members of parliament who tried to block the bill were suspended from the house for alleged misconduct.

Parliament passed the controversial Bill into law amid objections and protests from opposition legislators. The Bill has been criticized by human rights activists and the opposition.

The Bill requires a written note of planned meetings to be submitted to police a week in advance, and allows police to block or prevent a public meeting if they deem it a breach of the peace.
