President Yoweri Museveni yesterday officiated the Mbale District Market Complex which cost the Government Shs26 billion.
The multibillion market was partly funded by a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Market and Trade Infrastructure programme.
This market is part of the seven markets the government has built under its Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme – MATIP.
These markets include Mpanga market, Wandegeya market, Hoima market, Gulu Main market, Jinja Central market and Lira market.
The new market many facilities including stalls, a day care center, a police station, pharmacies, a car park, loading and off loading bays, cubicle, paved pitches, kiosks among others.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Museveni said the Government is constructing these structures to develop the country and assured that the public funds are not put to waste.
He however condemned the corrupt leaders who are embezzling public funds referring to them as a person who beef from a cow with anthrax and he/she eventually dies.
“When one eats beef from a cow with anthrax, they die. Government funds are well documented and recorded. The corrupt should beware, they are eating beef from a cow with anthrax. We shall find you,” Museveni warned the corrupt.
The President also commissioned a water extension project at St. Paul Mbale Senior Secondary School yesterday and the Wapa Courts to mark 10 years of the death of former Speaker James Wapakhabulo.
President Museveni expressed fond memories of the late Wapakhabulo and spoke glowingly of his choice of wife, Ambassador Angellina Wapakhabulo.
