President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has begun his 2 day visit to Uganda at the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni.

The visiting South Sudan President, who arrived in the country this afternoon, received a red carpet welcome plus a 21-gun salute after receiving a bouquet of flowers from 6-year old Brianna Nakimuli of Kampala Junior Academy, during the arrival ceremonies that took place at State House, Entebbe.

President Salva Kiir and his host President Museveni acknowledged the National Anthems of the 2 countries, Uganda and South Sudan. President Salva Kiir, thereafter, inspected a guard of honor mounted by Officers and Men of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

The 2 leaders later held bilateral talks after being received by the Minister of Defence, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, the Minister of State for Regional Cooperation, Mr. Asumani Kiyingi and Senior Security Officials.

The visiting President of South Sudan is accompanied by a high level delegation that includes among others, the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, General John Kong, the Minister in the Office of the President, Hon. Emmanuel Lowila and the SPLA Chief of Staff, General Lames Hoth, among others.

South Sudan, with a population of 8 million people, became Africa’s 54th new nation on 9th July 2011 after achieving independence following more than 5 decades of protracted armed struggle, in which 2 million lives were lost, to break free of the Arab-dominated Northern Sudan administration in Khartoum.
